HTML <area> tag

The HTML <area> element is used for defining an area in an image map (an image-map is an image with clickable areas), and optionally associates it with a hypertext link.

This element is used only within a <map> element.

Run code

The usemap attribute in the <img> tag is associated with the <map> element's name attribute, and creates a relationship between the image and the map.

The <area> element is fully supported by all browsers:

Attributes

alt string A text string alternative to display on browsers that do not display images
coords coordinates Defines the coordinates of a link
download filename This attribute instructs browsers to download a URL instead of navigating to it, so the user will be prompted to save it as a local file.
href URL Specifies the URL of a page or the name of the anchor that the link goes to.
hreflang language_code Specifies the language code of the destination URL.
media media_query Specifies what media/device the linked document is optimized for.
nohref value
Not supported in HTML5.
Indicates that no hyperlink exists for the associated area. Either this attribute or the href attribute must be present in the element
