CSS @keyframes Rule

The @keyframes rule controls the intermediate steps in a CSS animation sequence by defining styles for keyframes (or waypoints) along the animation sequence.

CSS Demo: @keyframes

@keyframes slide {
from {left: 0;}
to {left: 150px;}
}
@keyframes triangle {
0% {left: 0; top: 0;}
25% {left: 100px; top: 100px;}
50% {left: 150px; top: 0;}
100% {left: 0; top: 0;}
}

When you specify CSS styles inside the @Keyframes rule, the animation will gradually change from the current style to the new style at certain times.

To get an animation to work, you must bind the animation to an element.

Note: Declarations in a keyframe qualified with !important are ignored (see Examples below).

CSS Syntax:

@keyframes animation-name {
     keyframe-selector {property: value;}
}

Examples

The following example shows how to use @keyframes rule:

Run code

In the example above we have specified when the style will change by using the keywords from and to (which represents 0% (start) and 100% (complete)).

It is also possible to use percent. By using percent, you can add as many style changes as you like.

Run code

Change many CSS styles in one animation:

Run code

The !important rule is ignored in a keyframe:

Run code

Browser compatibility

The numbers in the table specify the first browser version that fully supports the @keyframes rule.

Numbers followed by -webkit- and -moz- specify the first version that worked with a vendor prefix.

Rule
@keyframes 43
4 -webkit-
16
5 -moz-
30
15 -webkit-
9
4 -webkit-

Property Values

The following table describes the values of @keyframes rule:

Value Description
animation-name Defines the name of the animation
keyframe-selector
A percentage of the time through the animation sequence at which the specified keyframe should occur

Legal values:

0-100%
from (same as 0%)
to (same as 100%)
property: value; Legal CSS properties and values
