CSS @import Rule

The @import rule is used to import style rules from other style sheets.

The @import rule must be at the top of the document (but after any @charset declaration).

CSS Demo: @import

@import: "example.css"; /* using string */
@import: url("round.css"); /* using url */
My style rules are defined in "example.css"

CSS Syntax:

@import [url|string] list-of-media-queries;

The following example shows how to use @import rule:

Run code

Adding Google Fonts using @import rule:

Alternative Techniques

There is another way to include CSS assets to your HTML document.

You can link to the same asset as you would any other CSS filter, in the <head> of the HTML document.

Run code

Browser compatibility

The numbers in the table specify the first browser version that fully supports the @import rule.

@import 1 1 6 1.3 5.5

Rule Values

The following table describes the values of @import rule:

Value Description
url(URL) A url representing the location of the resource to import. The url may be absolute or relative
string A string representing the location of the resource to import. The location path may be absolute or relative
list-of-media-queries A comma-separated list of media queries conditioning the application of the CSS rules defined in the linked URL
