CSS border-style Property

The border-style property is a shorthand property that sets the line style for all four sides of an element's border.

CSS Demo: border-style

border-style: solid;
border-style: dotted;
border-style: dashed;
border-style: double;
border-style: double solid;
border-style: solid dotted double;
This is a box with a border around it

The border-style property is a shorthand that sets the following properties in a single declaration:

The border-style property can have from one to four values:

  • When one value is specified, it applies the same border style to all four sides
  • When two values are specified, the first value applies to the top and bottom, the second to the left and right
  • When three values are specified, the first value applies to the top, the second to the left and right, the third to the bottom
  • When four values are specified, the values apply to the top, right, bottom, and left in that order (clockwise)
